Modernism On King
The Hour Glass has opened a new boutique in Sydney, located in a significant modernist building designed by Harry Seidler. The space aims to be more than just a retail location, serving as a destination for collectors to learn, connect, and experience watches, with a curated selection of brands including independent watchmakers.
The new boutique is situated at 108 King Street, within a building originally completed in 1978 as part of the 25 Martin Place Complex.
The interior design incorporates local materials like sandstone and green marble, with terrazzo floors and nickel detailing, framed by the building's original architectural features such as flowing ribs on the ceiling and a curved staircase.
The ground floor features digital screens and LED showcases displaying independent brands rarely seen in Australia, including MB&F, Urwerk, Gérald Genta, Krayon, and Ressence.
The upper floor is designed as a salon with seating and private spaces, offering a more intimate experience.
The boutique includes a private screening room showing 'The Persistence of Time,' a film by The Hour Glass about the history of horology.
Brands featured include Rolex, Cartier, MB&F (with Australia's first dedicated space), F.P.Journe (with Australia's first dedicated space), Akrivia, Daniel Roth, De Bethune, and Konstantin Chaykin.
The opening signifies The Hour Glass's intention to go beyond retail, positioning itself as a destination for artisanal independent watchmaking and fostering a collector community.
